Nutrition & Dehydration Prevention When Traveling

Singapore Eats and Treats… But Don’t Forget the Water

Families traveling to high-temperature destinations usually run into 2 problems: 1. What/where to eat and 2. Dehydration. Like many other travelers, Dr. Asha and I understand the difficulty of maintaining nutrition and being nutritionally conscious while vacationing in a place with unfamiliar cuisine.

Singapore is one of the best places in the world to eat from street vendors, known as Food Hawker Stalls. While the food is cheap, it isn’t to be mistaken for poor quality. The food is as fresh and as tasty as can be. You do not have to worry as both you and your kids can choose to eat from the multitude of different food options. All Singaporeans speak English and you can always ask the cooks about the food containers and any allergens that may be present. Most of all, don’t be afraid to try something new!

Don’t Worry, It Won’t Bite!

From our 19+ years each in physical therapy and our expertise in the medical field, we recognize the depth of nutrition in relation to the body’s functioning. We also recognize the impact that the surrounding environment has on the body, such as Singapore’s hot and humid climate all year around. For this, I recommend not only eating but carrying around a container of water and/or electrolytes mixed in.  This mixture came in handy as we were making our way through the Food Hawker Stalls in the sweltering heat and humidity.   Making sure you and your kids drink enough water will help to avoid dehydration. Also, a quick parent tip, don’t forget to wear a hat.

Physical Therapy Tip: The body needs 2 fluid ounces of water per kilogram of body weight during physical exertion.
